Geographical Information System Seminar Workshop

There is one individual that every Filipino can be proud of - Dr. Al Tongco. He may not be a genius in his field but he is a GIS (Geographical Information System) Guru based in Oklahoma State University. But most of all, he is a pure bred Filipino who happens to land on the USA soil. Dr. Tongco is a down-to-earth individual who never forgets where he came from. So when he was invited to share his expertise in the field of GIS, he never had any doubts to fly back home to showcase what GIS can offer. It was a 3-day seminar workshop hosted by one of the leading non-sectarian University in Northern Mindanao held last Sept 21 to 23.
His GIS proposal can be a breakthrough in the Philippine history having applied to the field of Academics. I myself, currently, is working on a project profiling the university students on a GIS approach. Other departments who also have a representation during the workshop is also working on some areas they believe GIS can apply.
There was also a lunch break trip to the Cagayan de Oro river on the second day. It was an awesome ride using the University Taxi. There were lots of scenic views and not to mention the squatters living along the river complementing the beautiful houses just across the river.

With all the support of the entire university workforce, our institution can become a GIS Model in the field of Academics if God allow us to be successful in this endeavor. The seminar ended up with three groups presenting their proposal study on how GIS can be applied. With me as head of our group presented the Students Profiling on a GIS approach.
